Lawn Care Service and Tree Care - Canton, GA

Lawn Care Tips:

We also provide the following services.

Reel mowing
This service will benefit the appearance of your Bermuda or Zoysia  lawn. Reel mowers are  used on golf course’s and they leave a clean and close carpet like cut due to the fact that they actually cut the grass like scissors where as a rotary mower slashes threw the blade of grass. As a result of actually clipping the grass blade this greatly reduces the discoloration and yellowing you might sometimes get with a rotary mower. Rotary mowers under some conditions especially with a dull blade tear the grass blade instead of cutting this makes it harder for the grass to recover from mowing in some cases causing  long term turf damage.  Not every lawn will be a good candidate for reel mowing from the start top dressing may be needed to smooth out the humps and dips you may or may not have. We can mow any where from 3/8 of an inch to 1 ½ inches depending on what your lawn will handle best. If you have a Bermuda lawn the closer you can mow the better because Bermuda actually greens from the top of the leaf not the bottom that is why when Bermuda is cut low after it has gotten to tall you may have some brown patches because the stem is actually brown and the taller the stem gets the more brown and yellow spots you may have when you mow. In order to receive the dark green carpet like look you will need a proper fertilization and weed control program. If your are interested in this service please contact us for a free evaluation.

About core aeration
Core aeration is the process of removing plugs of soil ranging in size from 2 - 3 inches long and 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick. They then will break back down and provide somewhat of a top dressing for the turf. The benefits are reduced soil compaction reducing the thatch layer, and allowing the air ,water, and chemicals applied to be better absorbed by the roots.Core aeration is a very important part of any lawn care program and should be performed at least once per year for cool or warm season grasses. Bermuda grasses any time during the growing season. Fescue between September and early Nov..

ABOUT THATCH                                                                                       Thatch is defined as an accumulation of dead and living plant material (stems, roots, and shoots) that develops between the soil surface and the green leaves of a turf. Thatch development is a natural process that occurs during normal growth. Ideally, under proper management, a turf achieves a balance between rate of organic matter production and rate of decomposition.
Some thatch is desirable because it forms a cushion that decreases turf wear. Thatch also insulates the soil from high and low temperatures and reduces evaporation losses of water from the soil surface. A thatch layer becomes undesirable when it exceeds a depth of 1/2 inch.
Thatch Problems
Excessive thatch accumulations can cause the following problems:
Thatch restricts water and air movement into the soil which are both needed for good root growth. This also leads to more frequent watering.
Thatch provides an ideal environment for some turf insects and disease organisms, such as brown patch and dollar spot.
Thatch makes mowing difficult because the turf becomes spongy. This lets the mower to sink into the turf and cause scalping. Scalping causes brown turf areas because all leaves have been removed.
Thatch raises the growing points (crowns), runners (rhizomes and stolons), and roots above the soil surface. These plant parts are then exposed to greater extremes in temperature, which often cause winter injury.
Thatch can restrict downward movement of pesticides and fertilizers in the soil. This results in reduced effectiveness of these materials.

Top dressing
Top dressing is the act of applying material to the top soil layer of the lawn and serves several functions depending on the mix of material used.
It provides nutrients and helps soften hard soil if you have tried every thing to get your lawn green and nothing seems to work this might do the trick.
It also helps to level out any dips and humps you might have in your lawn. Our process for applying top dressing is as follows.

For warm season grasses ( Bermuda or Zoisa)
1. Scalp the lawn and bag clippings.
2. Thoroughly aerate the lawn.
3. Apply and smooth top dressing fertilizer mix.
4. Clean up.

For cool season grass ( tall fescue)
1. Scalp the lawn and bag clippings
2. Thoroughly  aerate the lawn
3. Apply and smooth top dressing fertilizer mix.
4. Apply high quality seed.
5. Clean up.

Joe, I just wanted to thank you and tell you how much I appreciate the great job you have done servicing our yard maintenance requirements.

As you know, I travel extensively and it is extremely difficult to keep up with the maintenance that needs to be done.

For the first time since living in Alpharetta we have found someone that is trustworthy and that we can depend on to do a good job for us. I am especially impressed with the flexibility in the services that you can provide.
